Studijní obor 6701T International Economic and Political StudiesShort Description of the IEPS programme CHARLES UNIVERSITY FACULTY OF SOCIAL SCIENCE Two-Year Master's Degree Programme in INTERNATIONAL ECONOMIC AND POLITICAL STUDIES The fall of Communism in 33 countries of the world and the end of the Cold War brought a sequence of most startling changes in global politics and economics, whose importance would bear parallel only to the reconstruction of the European powers at the end of the First and the Second World Wars. Globalisation has moved from the realm of economic hypotheses to a practice exercised world-wide. There have been emerging new economic powers challenging the political order in capitalist incumbents. The expectations and the practices of free unregulated markets got into conflict with previous socio-political institutions at the level of both national and supra-national arrangements, which evoked the moves to rising nationalism and etatism. Instead of the European Union becoming the most competitive knowledge-based economy in the world during 2000-2010, as proposed by the Lisbon development plan, the enlarged EU-27 sunk to a stagnation whose end is difficult to forecast. A similar hardship has engulfed the economies of the USA and Japan while some former developing countries are expected to take over their positions. Some pundits speak about the era of declining Euro-American economic and political dominance. The threats of global warming, migration, Islamist orthodoxy, nuclear catastrophe or the bogey of public debts changed the thinking of politicians and raised questions that would go even further: questioning the sustainability of current political and economic paradigms all over the world. Quite surprisingly, instead of the dominance of free markets throughout the globalised world, the mutual dependence between governments and businesses was hardly as intensive in the capitalist countries in the past 120 years (with the exception of World War II) as it is at present. The world demand for expertise in the management of public affairs and political processes has received an unprecedented spur. This programme aims at offering new views in studying the inter-related economic and political processes by providing access to knowledge at a level compatible with prestigious universities in Europe and America. International Economic and Political Studies is a two-year English-language Master's degree programme fully accredited by the Czech Ministry of Education, which seeks to investigate contemporary political, economic and social issues from a multidisciplinary perspective. Although the predominant emphasis is on approaches from economics and political science, students will also be expected to explore historical and sociological perspectives. This programme offers a unique study both in its contents and methods. The students are expected to master the principles of modern non-conventional economic thinking and be able to apply it in political decision-making at the level of supra-national institutions, states, regional governments, corporations and political parties. Through the core courses, students will gain both the theoretical tools and the historical background to develop a deeper analysis of the world they live in, while through their elective classes (which they may choose from a wide range of up to 50 classes per semester and instructed by some of the best teachers in this country), they are free to develop their own specialisation, which will help you in your career – be it in politics, international organisations, public administration, academia, businesses in industries or financial services. The programme is deliberately structured to take advantage of the multidisciplinary nature of the Faculty and the contacts with the unique international environment of Prague. Students will be encouraged to make connections between different fields of study, learning to combine a global perspective with attention to detail and local interests. Last but not least, they should be able to express and defend their ideas in a sound and competent manner, which builds their self-confidence and upholds their value on labour markets throughout the world. It is an excellent stepping stone in building a wide spectrum of knowledge in various academic disciplines provided by five institutes of the Faculty of Social Sciences, as well as a valuable source of analytical skills and practical background knowledge that can be applied in professional life.
