Study programme N0312A250001: International Economic and Political StudiesAcademic year 2019/2020 Description of the two-year IEPS Master at CHARLES UNIVERSITY, FACULTY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES INTERNATIONAL ECONOMIC AND POLITICAL STUDIES (IEPS) International Economic and Political Studies (IEPS) is a post-graduate master´s study modelled on the principles of the Oxford-style PPE (Philosophy, Politics and Economics) programmes that are historically and currently among the most favoured educational concepts in social sciences. Their popularity comes from subsequent successes of their graduates in labour markets throughout the world. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philosophy,_politics,_and_economics. IEPS, taught in English, is open to three specialisation tracks: economics/finance, politics and humanities/philosophy. It aims towards an interdisciplinary understanding of social phenomena by developing skills useful for analysis and management in a wide range of careers and activities. It allows students to explore the foundations of domestic and international politics and economics in a manner that is underpinned by philosophical rigour and communication skills. The programme emphasizes courses which foster critical thinking for social developments in the world, increase sensitivity to ethical challenges in decision-making and policy design in an environment marked by cultural diversity, economic inequality, and differing political interests and requirements in decision-making. Students deal with the nature of economic and political agents, including the emergence of conflicts and attempted cooperation. They are expected to master the principles of modern non-conventional economic and political thinking, and be able to apply it in decision-making at the level of supra-national institutions, states, regional governments, corporations, firms, political parties and citizens. As the economic and cultural integration in the world accelerates after the fall of Communism, the demand for changing the way societies are organised calls for new analytical competences and unconventional dynamic thinking, which IEPS aims to demonstrate and instill in its students. Study prerequisites Applicants to the IEPS Programme come from a variety of undergraduate backgrounds. It is not necessary to have previously studied politics or economics. Admission may be granted also to students whose previous studies were in the humanities, commerce, law, or even mathematics, technical, or natural sciences. Although a background in mathematics is not formally required for admission, it is an advantage for IEPS applicants to have an aptitude for maths and statistics, especially those students who wish to specialise in economics and finance. All students must have a good command of the English language in order to successfully complete all of the course requirements, including the ability to write presentations, essays and discuss specialised topics.
