(PhD) Programme P0312D200011: Area Studies (DP_MTSA and DP_MTSA)
The doctoral programme Area Studies with a standard duration of four years focuses on various aspects of contemporary developments (since 1990) in North America and Europe (it does not deal primarily with the Czech environment), as well as on theoretical and methodological issues in the field of area studies. The course is offered in both full-time and combined form. The study obligations of each student and the timetable for their fulfilment are obligatorily determined by an individual study plan. During the first six semesters of study, students complete the prescribed contact teaching and other academic obligations in the form of publishing, active participation in international conferences and study internship abroad. By the end of the eighth semester at the latest, students must pass the state doctoral examination. The studies are completed by the defence of the dissertation. In all matters related to their studies, students should contact their supervisors, the designated employee of the IMS Secretariat, Mgr. Iveta Hönigerová, and the programme supervisor, Prof. Michal Kubát, PhD.
Further details are set out in the
Rules for the Organisation of Doctoral Studies at the Institute of International Studies of the Charles University and other relevant
faculty regulations.
The field of study is intended for graduates of Master's degree programmes; the quality of the dissertation project submitted during the admission interview is decisive for admission to the study.
Prof. Mgr. Tomáš Weiss, M.A., Ph.D. is the supervisor of the programme and chairman of the board.
Graduates of this study programme find employment mainly in public administration, diplomacy, non-governmental organisations, media, academia, etc. The unemployment rate of graduates is zero and all of them obtain prestigious positions (including managerial positions) in the field they have studied. Many graduates end up work abroad, including in European Union, NATO or UN institutions.
