Study specialisation (PPE) 6701T012: International Economic and Political Studies

Description of the two-year IEPS Master in Prague at

CHARLES UNIVERSITY, FACULTY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES

INTERNATIONAL ECONOMIC AND POLITICAL STUDIES (IEPS)

IEPS is a post-graduate (M.A.) study modelled on the principles of the Oxford style PPE programmes that are among the most favoured educational concepts in social sciences. Their popularity has been earned not only due to the prestige of the universities offering such interdisciplinary degrees but moreover due to the subsequent success of its graduates in the labour market throughout the world. See ExternĂ odkaz http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philosophy,_politics,_and_economics for more evidence.

IEPS, taught in English, is a unique study experience in terms of both its contents and methods. It combines all five of the specialised stand-alone curricula of the five institutes of the Faculty of Social Sciences (i.e. the institutes of economics, politics, sociology, communication and international studies) into one integrated programme which represents the whole faculty. The programme aims at an interdisciplinary understanding of social phenomena by developing skills useful for analysis and management suitable a wide range of careers and activities. It allows students to explore the foundations of domestic and international politics and economics in a manner that is underpinned by philosophical rigour and communication skills. The programme includes courses aimed at fostering critical thinking of social developments in the world, gaining sensitivity to ethical challenges in decision-making and designing policies in an environment marked by cultural diversity, economic inequality, requirements of efficiency and conflicts of the objectives of agents and institutions.

In the years after the fall of Communism, due to a new era of economic globalization and global political awakening, new economic and political forces have emerged to challenge the traditional political order of the world. As a result, there is a wide demand for analysts, politicians, bankers, CEOs, and opinion leaders endowed with the appropriate human capital for acquiring new insights, and abilities to influence decision-making for the better. As the economic and cultural integration in the world accelerates, the life of individuals, as well as the networks of governance of social groups, enterprises, regions and nations are now as dependent on the evolution of the world affairs as never before in history. The demand for changing the way societies are organised calls for new analytical competences and unconventional dynamic thinking, which IEPS aims to demonstrate and instill in its students.

Study prerequisites

Applicants to the IEPS Programme come from a variety of undergraduate backgrounds. It is not necessary to have previously studied politics or economics. Admission may be granted also to students whose previous studies were in the humanities, commerce, law, or even mathematics, technical, or natural sciences. Although a background in mathematics is not formally required for admission, it is an advantage for IEPS applicants to have an aptitude for maths and statistics, especially those students who wish to specialise in economics and finance. All students must have a good command of the English language in order to successfully complete all of the course requirements, including the ability to write presentations, essays and discuss specialised topics. Language of instruction: English.
